Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL)
June 20, 2008 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Omni William Penn Hotel
Registration: http://www.jcdl2008.org/registration.html

This all-day workshop will provide information and training for institutions seeking to build or join LOCKSS-based distributed digital preservation networks. Please consider attending if you are interested in learning more about the technical logistics and operational considerations of hosting or participating in a Private LOCKSS Network for distributed preservation.

AGENDA

08:30 - 09:00
Breakfast

09:00 - 09:45
Distributed Digital Preservation

This session will provide an overview of distributed digital preservation, LOCKSS, and the MetaArchive Cooperative. We will cover: What is distributed digital preservation; what is LOCKSS; what does it require (hardware, software, tech support, staff and skills); what is the MetaArchive Cooperative.

09:45 - 10:15
PLN System Architecture

In this session, we will provide an overview of the architecture used in creating PLNs. We will describe available tools and their roles in the preservation processes that a PLN performs.

10:15 - 10:30
Break

10:30 - 11:15
PLN Deployment Scenarios

This session will provide attendees with an understanding of different PLN scenarios. We will provide a template for making decisions that shape particular network structures.

11:15 - 12:00
Developing Plugins

In this session, we will discuss how to ready a collection for ingest, including the roles of collection units, archival units, collection-level metadata, plugins, and manifest pages, as well as the importance of designing solid collection development practices.

12:00 - 01:00
Lunch
(on your own)

01:00 - 01:45
Set Up a LOCKSS Network/Node

This session will teach attendees how to set up a LOCKSS network and its individual nodes. We will discuss the technical/organizational details of this process and what resources different network configurations may require.

01:45 - 03:15
Ingest, Monitoring, and Recovery

This session will cover topics that include creating archival units, manifest pages, successful plugins (and their common pitfalls); monitoring a node and a network; the cache manager tool; and the processes and procedures for retrieving and reconstructing collections and nodes of a network.

03:15 - 03:30
Break

03:30 - 04:00
Network Sustainability

We will discuss network considerations. What are the choices and options for organizing and managing a PLN? How do you make decisions regarding the structure of your PLN? What are the sustainability implications of different PLN setups?

04:00 - 04:30
Wrap Up

We will use this final session to answer questions that have arisen during the day and to hear from attendees regarding their experience.
