New Preservation Membership Option
Beginning in Fall 2016, institutions that join as Preservation Members now have the option to pay an annual technology fee ($2,000) as an alternative to purchasing and maintaining a server as part of their membership responsibilities.
MetaArchive memberships run for three-year terms, and are available in three tiers: Sustaining, Preservation, and Collaborative.
All three tiers involve the following costs*:
In the first year, the institution will purchase a server (as of January 2015, approximately $5,500 or less).
2% of a systems administrator’s time*
Administrator/point of contact
Archivist / Librarian / Curator who preps content for ingest
NOTE: Are you concerned that MetaArchive will cost more in human resources than outsourcing? Except for 2% of your systems administrator’s time, the staffing required by MetaArchive is the same as an outsourced solution. (And 2% is a generous estimate.)
Storage: $.59/GB/year (or $585/TB/yr) for content stored in the network.
*see note on Preservation Member technology fee
Yearly dues per level of membership:
Sustaining Members: $5,500/year
Sustaining members contribute the most money and receive the most in terms of control and leadership. As leaders in the field of distributed preservation practices, these members are involved in testing and development and maintenance of hardware and software. They also help set the standards for network connectivity and transmission. Our Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from Sustaining Member institutions.
Preservation Members: $3,000/year
Preservation Members are mainly participants and beneficiaries, rather than leaders, of our Cooperative’s overall efforts. As such, they are not as involved in the operations of MetaArchive as Sustaining Members. Preservation Members collectively nominate one nonvoting representative for all of the institutions in this membership category to sit at the annual Steering Committee meetings.
Collaborative Members: (varies according to number of institutions - please contact Sam Meister to negotiate membership fees)
Collaborative Members are bands of institutions that look and act like one unified member because they share a central server. This level of membership is designed to allow existing digital collaboratives to preserve their co-hosted content for a fraction of what it would cost to do so as individual members. Collaborative Members collectively nominate one nonvoting representative for all of the institutions in this membership category to sit at the annual Steering Committee meetings.
If an institution wanted to preserve 2 TB of content with us, they would pay:
Sustaining Member: [$5,500 (membership) +$1,170 (space) x 3 years] + $5,500 (server) = $25,510/3 years, or $8,503/year
Preservation Member: [$3,000 (membership) + $1,170 (space) x3 years] + $5,500 (server) = $18,010/3 years, or $6,003/year
Collaborative Member (mock example comprised of 20 institutions): [$4,000 (membership) + $1,170 (space) x3 years] + $5,500 (server) = $21,010/3 years or $7,003/year total or $350.00/year per member
